REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

ABOUT THE EVENT

This interactive workshop is designed to help creatives manage their inner critic. Participants will learn to identify their unique patterns of negative self-talk and acquire strategies to enhance resilience and self-confidence. After pinpointing specific instances of self-doubt and negative beliefs, participants will start developing three types of proactive strategies. These strategies will help them determine when to convert negative thinking into creative motivation and when to disregard the thoughts entirely. A key emphasis will be placed on distinguishing between rational and irrational thoughts and identifying which ones support or hinder creative pursuits. The practical tips that participants will gain from this workshop are fundamental to creative thinking in general and can thus be applied to any project. All workshop attendees will receive an additional exercise via email after the event to help them determine their values.

OUTCOMES

  • Participants will learn to recognize their unique patterns of negative self-talk.
  • Participants will start developing strategies to combat their inner critic while building resilience and self-confidence.
  • Participants will become better at discerning between rational thoughts that protect us and irrational thoughts that paralyze or deceive us.
  • Participants will also learn how to discuss their negative thought patterns with friends in a way that fosters compassion and genuine support.

Coping Through Humor: On Writing Mischief Diary and Learning How to Forgive

An inspirational talk on the power of creative writing to heal
Arab Open University
PRIVATE EVENT
Read more...

About the Event:

In this event, Nada Faris will speak for approximately 15 minutes. She will share a personal story about her journey into literature and how it helped her forgive her parents. Following that, she will guide a four-part writing exercise using Marshall Rosenberg's Non-Violent Communication. During the exercise, audience members will be invited to write down a memory of when they experienced negative emotions, such as feeling wronged, hurt, disappointed, sad, ashamed, or angry. They will then learn how to separate the objective events from their subjective interpretation of the story. By tuning into the sensations in their bodies, they will then identify their feelings, and by naming their feeling, they’ll be able to uncover their underlying needs. Lastly, they will learn how to express their needs in a compassionate manner. Nada Faris took this process a step further when writing her book Mischief Diary by transforming her negative memories into humorous tales. Students will receive an additional writing prompt to try at home that will help them inject humor into their painful memories. After the four-part writing exercise, the audience will have 45 minutes to ask questions about Nada's life as an artist in the Middle East and about the writing exercise they had just learned.

About the Presenter:

The event will be presented by Nada Faris, a writer and certified coach for creatives. Faris holds an MFA in Creative Writing and Literary Translation from Columbia University and has represented Kuwait in the UK and in the US. She has received an Arab Woman Award from Harper’s Bazaar Arabia in the category of Inspirational Woman for her impact on creatives in Kuwait, and is, furthermore, the author of multiple books in different genres. Her shorter works have appeared in The Norton Anthology for Hint Fiction, Gulf Coast Journal, Indianapolis Review, Nimrod, Tribes, One Jacar, The American Journal of Poetry, and more.

Event Objectives:

By the end of this 2-hour event, students will:
  • Learn about the radical healing potential of creative writing.
  • Hear about a writer from Kuwait and listen to her personal experience of navigating her creative passions while making ends meet in a demanding society.
  • Acquire 4 journaling prompts that can improve their relationships with their loved ones, friends, family, and co-workers.
  • Receive an additional writing prompt that can help transform their negative memories into funny anecdotes.

Unleash Your Inner Poet: Three Writing Tools in Every Poet's Toolbox

In this interactive poetry writing workshop, we will explore the three essential tools that every poet relies on. These include: “image,” “sound,” and “form.”
Through practical writing exercises, participants will learn how to create rich images that set the tone and determine the stakes of the poem, dictate the rhythm or the sound of the line, and use form to “show rather than tell” additional meaning.

About the Workshop Facilitator:
The workshop will be facilitated by Nada Faris, a writer and certified coach for creatives. Her shorter works have appeared in The Norton Anthology for Hint Fiction, Gulf Coast Journal, Indianapolis Review, Nimrod, Tribes, One Jacar, The American Journal of Poetry, and more.
Workshop Objectives:
By the end of this 2-hour workshop, participants will:

  • Read a Shakespearean sonnet and see how modern writers responded to the form.
  • Learn how to use different words (nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs) to create rich images and how the image itself can determine the mood, tone, stakes, or meaning of the poem.
  • Create rhythm in their line without relying on end rhymes, for instance, by using consonance and assonance, beats and stress, and anaphora, to name a few sonic techniques.
  • Learn how to “show” rather than “tell” meaning in a poem by manipulating the form. These formal techniques include understanding how poetic lines differ from sentences, how to organize the fourteen lines and make use of white space, and how enjambment can create tension or add another layer of meaning.
  • Write their own 14-line poem using the writing exercises introduced in the class.
  • Acquire a packet with more poems and writing prompts to help them work on their poetic skills long after the workshop.
